How to Update BIOS for Ryzen 5000

Ryzen 500 desktop processors first came out in November 2020. If you have an older motherboard though, you might be concerned that the new processor will not be able to support it.

For example, if you own the AMD X570, the A520, or the B550 motherboard, you will have to update the BIOS to be able to use the systems together. If you do not update the BIOS, you might get a processor that fails to boot or that has too many glitches to use properly.

Updating the Ryzen 5000 BIOS

Updating the BIOS is pretty straightforward. There are a few different methods you can choose, but this one seems to be the easiest if you are reading about all the different ways discussed in forums and videos seen online.

  • Find and download the latest BIOS version on your computer.
  • Unzip the file.
  • Copy the BIOS to a Flash Drive.
  • Reboot the PC.
  • Enter the BIOS from the flash drive.
  • Launch the BIOS firmware update tool or the flashing tool.
  • Select the Flash drive to launch the update.
  • Finalize the BIOS update.

Your computer might shut off and restart once the BIOS has been installed.

Does Everyone Need to Update BIOS for Ryzen?

Not everyone will need to update their BIOS, but most people using older motherboards will need to since the systems will not work together properly without it. Any motherboard in the 300 or 400 series will need to be updated, including the B350, the B450, the X370, and the X470.

Some motherboards are sold with a sticker on them that say Ryzen 3000 ready or Ryzen 5000 ready. This means the processor is ready to be used as-is and you do not need to update the BIOS.

Is It Bad If I Don’t Update BIOS?

Some people choose not to update the BIOS if their computer is working properly. If your computer does not need any updates and is working fine, updating the BIOS might even hinder the computer.

Sometimes the computer will lose power when it’s flashing the BIOS and it will become unable to boot. If so, just leave the computer with the current BIOS and only worry about updating it if you need to for the motherboard.

You also don’t need to update your BIOS as often as you update computer software. Updating the BIOS can be dangerous because the process is much more complicated than just updating a Windows program.

If something goes wrong when you are updating the BIOS, you can also end up bricking your computer. Bricking your computer is more serious than the computer just being unable to reboot. When a computer has become bricked, it cannot be used because the firmware has damaged the computer beyond repair.

If this is the case, you will see yourself spending a large amount of money to buy a new computer since the old one is completely unusable.

Is a Processor Needed to Update the BIOS?

In almost all cases, a CPU is needed to update the BIOS. Most motherboards do not have a flash BIOS so they cannot update it correctly. If you do not have a working CPU, you will not be able to update the BIOS.

People who do not want to spend money on a CPU often get a board that has a flash BIOS built-in. You can just upload it from a flash in this case.

Does Ryzen 3000 Also Need the BIOS Update?

The Ryzen 3000 is an older model than the 5000, so it usually does not need to have an updated BIOS as the 5000 does. For example, all X570 motherboards should work with the 3000 series processor.

Other motherboards will need a BIOS update though, such as the older models, including the X470 and B450. The B350 and the X370 will also need a BIOS update. Motherboard models that are even older, such as the A320, will not even work if you update the BIOS.

Why are BIOS Updates Needed?

Since we identified the potential risks that come with BIOS updates above, you might be wondering why people update the BIOS and if there are any benefits. Sometimes updating the BIOS is unavoidable and has to be done since there are real benefits.

The main reason people need to update the BIOS is that they need hardware updates. These updates will allow the motherboard to identify all new hardware components such as the processors, RAM, and other things that are needed to operate the CPU and the motherboard efficiently together.

If you are worried about the risks, you can always choose to update the processor first. Sometimes updating the processor is enough to get the motherboard working. If the processor has been updated though, and there is no recognition from the BIOS, you will need to update the BIOS as well.

What If My Ryzen 5000 Supports My Motherboard?

If your motherboard is already supported, you do not need to update the BIOS. The following motherboards are supported by the Ryzen 5000:

  • X570
  • B450
  • A520
  • B550
  • X570

The Ryzen 5000 also comes with the new processor AGESA 1.1, which is automatically supported. This processor will support all the motherboards listed above.

How Long Will the BIOS Update Take?

BIOS updates do not take long, usually only about one or two minutes. If it’s starting to take longer than 10 minutes, this can signal a problem. You might want to cancel the update if it’s taking too long because you risk bricking the processor and then not being able to use it anymore, which is costly.

Should Windows 10 Also Be Updated?

It’s always a good idea to make sure you’re running on the latest version of Windows before updating the BIOS.
