Microsoft announced the launch of its Surface Laptop 3, which comes out in 13.5-inch and 15-inch form factors. The 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 is the first for the Surface Laptop line. The hardware featured inside these Laptops is exclusive AMD silicon and can get as low as $800.

AMD’s Ryzen 7 3780U is being dubbed as a “Microsoft Surface Edition” processor by AMD. A lower end Ryzen 5 3580U option is also being offered by Microsoft. Both the Ryzen 7 3780U and the Ryzen 5 3580U are custom accelerated processing units (APUs) which pair the Vega graphics with the Zen+ CPU cores. These higher-end parts are an enhanced version of the Ryzen 3700U. Both the higher end and the lower end chips are 15W parts, with the 3780U featuring a hybrid-turbo-like capacity that can burst up to 4GHz.

Microsoft suggests that the 3870U is the fastest mobile processor, so this results in the Surface Laptop 3 being the fastest 15-inch laptop anyone can get. Surface Laptop 3 falls in the premium ultrathin category when it comes to fine print notes that are no thicker than 20mm. The 13.5 form factor of the Surface Laptop 3 comes with the 10th gen Intel Ice Lake CPU options. For those looking for a bigger model, it’s either AMD or nothing at all.

AMD offers some internal benchmark to label the highlight the graphics and gaming performance the 3780 can provide when compared to other options. These are the 3DMark 11 and Timespy scores

  • AMD Ryzen 7 3780U (Vega 11, 15W):

Timespy scores-1126.5

Preorder on the Surface Laptop 3 starts at $999 for the 13.5-inch with Intel inside and $1,199 for the 15-inch model with AMD inside. This is a great opportunity for AMD, which has been successful so far in pressurizing Intel. If AMD’s benchmarks are accurate, the performance of these laptops is surely gonna be intriguing.
